Sweet Crisp Dutch Bean – Details & Planting Guide

Sweet Crisp Dutch Bean

Details & Complete Planting Guide

Ⅰ. Product Details

Variety Characteristics

Sweet Crisp Dutch Bean is an early-maturing legume variety with a growth cycle of 60-70 days from sowing to harvest. The plant is a climbing vine with a height of 1.5-2m, with white flowers and flat pods of 10-15cm in length and 1.5-2cm in width. Each pod contains 4-6 seeds, with tender pods, crisp texture and sweet taste, suitable for fresh eating and processing.

Quality Advantages

  • Pods are tender and crisp with no fibrous strings, rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, dietary fiber, protein and minerals such as potassium and iron, with high nutritional value.
  • Good commercial quality: Pods are bright green, uniform in size, resistant to aging and not easy to fiberize, with a long shelf life after harvest.
  • Strong adaptability: Cold-resistant and disease-resistant, suitable for open field and protected cultivation, with high yield and stable performance.

High-Yield Characteristics

Under proper management, the yield per mu can reach 1500-2000kg. Each plant can bear 20-30 pods, with concentrated pod setting and continuous harvesting for 20-30 days. It has strong disease resistance to powdery mildew and rust, and is suitable for multiple cropping.

Application Scenarios

  • Fresh food market: Sold as a high-grade vegetable, popular in supermarkets, farmers’ markets and restaurants for stir-frying, blanching and salad;
  • Processing industry: Suitable for quick-freezing, canning and dehydration processing, with broad market prospects;
  • Export: Meets the quality standards of international markets and is an important export vegetable variety.

Selection & Storage Suggestions

  • Selection skills: Choose pods with bright green color, straight shape, no insect damage, no spots and tender texture;
  • Storage method: Wrap with plastic wrap and store in refrigerator crisper for 5-7 days, or blanch and freeze for long-term storage. For processing, process within 24 hours after harvest to maintain quality.

Ⅱ. Planting Methods

Planting Preparation

1. Soil Selection

Sweet Crisp Dutch Bean prefers fertile, loose, well-drained sandy loam or loam with pH value of 6.0-7.5. Avoid continuous cropping with legume crops to prevent soil-borne diseases. Deep plow the land 25-30cm before planting, apply base fertilizer: 2000-3000kg of decomposed organic fertilizer, 30kg of compound fertilizer and 15kg of potassium sulfate per mu. Mix evenly and make ridges with width of 80-100cm.

2. Seed Treatment

  • Seed selection: Choose full, plump seeds with high germination rate, with seed consumption of 10-15kg per mu;
  • Seed soaking and germination: Soak seeds in 25-30℃ warm water for 4-6 hours, then place in a wet gauze at 20-25℃ for germination, and sow when seeds show white buds (about 1-2 days).

Sowing & Field Arrangement

1. Sowing Time

  • Spring sowing: March to April, when soil temperature stabilizes above 10℃;
  • Autumn sowing: August to September, avoid high temperature period, suitable for planting in southern China;
  • Winter sowing: November to December in southern China, protected cultivation in northern China.

2. Sowing Methods

  • Drill sowing: Dig sowing furrows on ridges with row spacing of 40-50cm and plant spacing of 10-15cm, sow 2-3 seeds per hole, cover with 2-3cm fine soil, water thoroughly;
  • Broadcasting: Suitable for small-area planting, mix seeds with fine soil and broadcast evenly, then cover with soil and water.

3. Trellis Setting

When seedlings grow to 15-20cm height, set up trellises (height 2-2.5m) or insert bamboo poles for vines to climb, which can improve light utilization rate and pod yield. Tie vines to trellises in time to prevent lodging.

Field Management

1. Water Management

  • Seedling stage: Keep soil moist to promote emergence and seedling growth, avoid waterlogging;
  • Vine growth period: Control watering properly to promote root down growth, water in time when soil is dry;
  • Flowering and pod setting period: Ensure adequate water supply, water once every 7-10 days, keep soil moisture stable to improve pod setting rate;
  • Pod expansion period: Maintain proper soil moisture, avoid drought and waterlogging to prevent pod abscission.

2. Fertilizer Management

  • Seedling fertilizer: Apply 5-8kg of urea per mu 10-15 days after emergence to promote seedling growth;
  • Flowering fertilizer: Apply 10-15kg of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer per mu at initial flowering stage to promote pollination and pod setting;
  • Pod fertilizer: Apply 15-20kg of compound fertilizer per mu every 10-15 days after pod setting, and spray 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution on leaves for 1-2 times to promote pod expansion.

3. Vine Pruning

  • Pinch the top when vines grow to 2m height to promote lateral branch growth and increase pod setting;
  • Remove old leaves, diseased leaves and weak branches in time to improve ventilation and light transmission;
  • Control excessive growth of vines to ensure nutrient supply for pod development.

4. Disease & Pest Control

  • Powdery mildew: Spray with 25% triadimefon wettable powder 1000x solution or 50% carbendazim wettable powder 800x solution;
  • Rust: Use 15% triadimefon wettable powder 1500x solution for spray control;
  • Aphids and bean borers: Control with 10% imidacloprid wettable powder 1500x solution or 2.5% deltamethrin emulsifiable concentrate 2000x solution;
  • Root rot: Use 50% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder 800x solution for root irrigation.

Harvesting

  • Harvest time: Harvest when pods are fully expanded, seeds are small and pods are tender (about 10-15 days after flowering), harvest in the morning or evening;
  • Harvesting method: Pick pods carefully by hand, avoid damaging vines and flowers, harvest once every 2-3 days, and harvest in batches;
  • Post-harvest treatment: Sort pods, remove damaged ones, pack in plastic bags or cartons, and store in a cool place or refrigerator for sale or processing.
