Care & Growing Guide

1Pot & Soil Selection

Choose terracotta or purple sand pots with drainage holes, 3-5cm larger in diameter than the ball. Avoid oversized pots to prevent waterlogging.

Soil formula: Succulent soil + perlite + coarse sand = 2:1:1, or use cactus-specific soil for good drainage. Avoid garden soil or heavy clay.

2Light Requirements

Place in sunny locations (south-facing balconies/windowsills) for 4-6 hours of direct sunlight in spring, autumn and winter – sufficient light enhances green color and spine luster.

Shade properly (30% shade cloth) when temperature exceeds 32℃ in summer to avoid skin scorching and yellowing.

For indoor maintenance, move to sunny areas 1-2 days a week to prevent etiolation and deformation.

3Watering Principles

Follow “Water only when dry, water thoroughly when watering” – overwatering is the main cause of root rot.

Spring & Autumn: Water every 10-15 days, pouring slowly along the pot edge to avoid water on the ball or spine gaps.

Summer: Semi-dormant in high temperature, water every 20-30 days with half the amount, choosing early morning or evening.

Winter: Stop watering when temperature below 10℃ (dormant period), keep soil dry to prevent freezing and rot.

4Temperature Adaptation

Optimal growth temperature: 15-28℃ – fastest growth in this range.

Winter protection: Move indoors when temperature below 5℃ (keep above 5℃), away from cold drafts from windows/air conditioners.

Summer cooling: Spray water around the pot to increase humidity when temperature exceeds 35℃, avoid stuffy environments.

5Fertilization

Fertilize only in spring and autumn (growing period), stop in summer and winter (dormant period).

Choose diluted succulent fertilizer, cactus organic fertilizer, or NPK compound fertilizer (diluted to 1/4 concentration).

Fertilize once a month – sprinkle small amount along the pot edge or water with diluted fertilizer, avoid direct contact with the ball to prevent burning roots.

6Repotting & Pruning

Repot every 2-3 years, best in spring (March-April). Check roots during repotting and trim rotten/dry fibrous roots.

Pruning: No special pruning needed. Keep 1-2 healthy side shoots to grow into clumps, or remove them to avoid nutrient consumption.

7Pest & Disease Control

Common disease: Root rot (caused by waterlogging) – remove from pot, trim rotten roots, disinfect with carbendazim, repot with new soil.

Common pests: Scale insects, spider mites – wipe small infestations with alcohol-soaked cotton, spray succulent-specific insecticide for severe cases (once a week, 2-3 times continuously).
