1Pot & Soil Selection

Choose terracotta or plastic pots with drainage holes, 2-3cm larger in diameter than the root ball. For hanging, select specialized hanging pots for easy suspension.

Soil formula: Leaf mold + garden soil + perlite = 2:1:1, or use general-purpose nutrient soil mixed with a small amount of river sand to improve drainage. Avoid heavy, compacted soil to prevent root rot.

2Light Requirements

Thrives in semi-shady environments with bright indirect light (e.g., living rooms, north-facing balconies) – 2-4 hours of indirect light daily is sufficient for normal growth.

Avoid direct sunlight: Provide 50% shade when temperature exceeds 30℃ in summer to prevent leaf scorching, which causes dry leaf tips and yellowing.

Insufficient light leads to leggy vines and sparse leaves – move to bright areas 1-2 days a week to maintain green foliage.

3Watering Principles

Follow “Water only when dry, water thoroughly when watering” – water after the top 2-3cm of soil dries out. Avoid frequent watering to prevent root rot.

Spring & Autumn: Water every 7-10 days during the growing period, pouring slowly along the pot edge for full soil absorption.

Summer: High temperature accelerates evaporation, water every 5-7 days. Mist leaves to maintain 50%-60% air humidity.

Winter: Growth slows below 10℃, water every 15-20 days to keep soil slightly moist – avoid waterlogging to prevent root freezing.

4Temperature Adaptation

Optimal growth temperature: 15-25℃ – foliage grows vigorously with bright color in this range.

Winter protection: Cold-tolerant (withstands around 5℃), move indoors when temperature drops below 5℃, away from cold drafts to prevent leaf damage.

Summer cooling: Move to well-ventilated shaded areas when temperature exceeds 32℃, enhance air circulation to avoid leaf wilting from stuffiness.

5Fertilization

Fertilize mainly in spring and autumn (growing periods). Stop fertilizing in high summer and low winter temperatures.

Choose diluted NPK compound fertilizer, green plant organic fertilizer, or decomposed cake fertilizer water. Avoid high-concentration nitrogen fertilizer to prevent leggy growth.

Fertilize once a month – apply diluted fertilizer along the pot edge, then water lightly to aid root absorption and prevent root burn.

6Pruning & Training

Prune best in spring and autumn growing periods – promptly trim leggy, weak, yellow or dead branches to maintain a compact shape.

Shape training: For climbing growth, set up brackets or guide ropes to direct vines upward. For trailing shape, regularly prune top branches to promote side shoot growth.

Cutting propagation: Use healthy pruned branches (with 2-3 nodes) for cuttings to cultivate new plants.

7Repotting & Propagation

Repot every 1-2 years, best in spring (March-April). Remove some old soil during repotting, trim rotten roots, and replace with new nutrient soil.

Propagation method: Mainly cuttings – select healthy branches (10-15cm long with 2-3 buds) in spring and autumn, remove lower leaves, insert into moist sand, maintain 20-25℃, and roots will form in 2-3 weeks.

8Pest & Disease Control

Common diseases: Leaf spot and root rot, mostly caused by waterlogging and poor ventilation. Spray carbendazim solution once a week for 2-3 consecutive weeks at the initial stage, and improve ventilation.

Common pests: Aphids, spider mites, scale insects – wipe leaves with alcohol-soaked cotton for small infestations. For severe infestations, spray green plant-specific insecticide, ensuring full coverage of leaf surfaces and undersides.
